What is, "THE ABEL PROJECT"?

The Abel Project was inspired by the Jewish Holiday of, “Tu b’ Shevat”, which celebrates the new blooms of the trees. This holiday signifies when the earth is once again awakened and everything blossoms anew. This is a holiday on which many give money to plant trees in the land of Israel. This is sometimes done in the memory of lost loved ones. As this seems to be a timeless and living memorial to those who no longer are.

We at M.A.S.K., believe that this could be the perfect memorial for children and other victims whose lives are claimed on a daily basis, by gun and street violence. The species of trees that we have selected will ideally, all have red leaves spring through fall, to symbolize the blood of the victim that was shed in the places that they now grow. This is to be a constant reminder to the world that someone lived and was taken too soon and hopefully a comfort to families who have experienced loss.

How it works...

Upon locating the exact spot the tree will be planted:

· We coordinate with the city of Evansville (or any suburban or state municipalities), and the local Evansville Park District.  Each plays a role in helping us determine if it is possible to place the tree on the selected site.

· Once we receive clearance to place the tree, a date is set and we make an appointment with a licensed bonded private contractor or the department of forestry, to complete the actual placement.

 · On the date of placement we invite the family and community to be present and take place in the act of putting the tree into the soil, in hope that this will foster a sense of responsibility and unity.
